The Senior Institute

The Senior Institute, founded in 1991, was sponsored by CFCC to promote continuing education, learning opportunities, quality leisure time, and social interaction for residents 50 and better. At the time of its inception, Senior Institute was a relatively new concept in educational learning for older learners. Such entities are attached to a college or university and form a unique part of the institution for older learners.

Programming
The classes to be offered each year are selected by the Senior Institute Curriculum Committee after input from the membership and identification of available and qualified instructors for the subjects desired. A variety of short non-credit courses are offered each term. Classes are usually held on campus from 10 a.m. to noon or 2 to 4 p.m.

Some recent class subjects include Florida History, Comparative Religions, Florida Water Issues, Ancient Culture, Music Appreciation, and Great Books. In addition to scheduled classes, the Senior Institute hosts annual social events including the Spring Fling, December Holiday Party, and many field trips.

Membership
The Institute's enrollment is 360 members. Membership is available for $100 per year and includes unlimited access to all courses (for a non-refundable fee of $5 per coursse) offered through the program. A few courses require buying books or supplies. All members are considered CFCC students and are accorded various student privileges as such.

Benefits to the College
The program offers a strong link between CFCC and the senior community. In addition to community development benefits, membership revenues collected over direct expenses are maintained in a special Senior Institute account at CFCC. Funds have been designated by the advisory board for scholarships and other college needs. Recently, the Senior Institute donated $25,000 from these funds for the college’s building campaign.
